Green PR and Marketing

Today’s consumers have a heightened sense of personal responsibility toward protecting the environment. From choosing earth-friendly products and services and establishing renewable energy alternatives to lowering their carbon footprint, people want to know that how they live, work and play are not harming themselves or the environment.

Recognizing this protective mentality, savvy businesses understand that sustainability is smart business. Establishing a ‘green’ position or element within a corporation’s brand and message helps capture that eco-friendly consumer mindshare, positions companies as industry-leading experts and portrays them as innovative businesses that truly care about the social, economic and environmental well being of the planet.

Waterhouse Public Relations has been at the forefront of the green movement for years, developing effective ‘green’ marketing campaigns and helping our clients maximize their eco-investments. From political committees to world-class destination resorts, WPR has garnered local, regional and national media showcasing our clients’ internal and external sustainability initiatives, certifications and environmentally friendly missions.

City of Chattanooga: Recycle Right

In 2007 the City of Chattanooga approached Waterhouse Public Relations to develop and run an aggressive recycling education and proper waste management program. Through creative and strategic tactics WPR was successful in educating Chattanooga citizens about the benefits of recycling and how to properly recycle within the city. In one year convenience center tonnage increased 62 percent, curbside collection tonnage increased from 2,300 to 3,081 and over 3,151 tons of trash were kept out of the landfill. In June of 2009, Waterhouse PR launched a “JOIN” Campaign to encourage citizens to sign up for the biweekly curbside collection program offered by the City. Within the first six months, over 10,000 citizens subscribed. As a result of Waterhouse’s aggressive education campaign, curbside recycling residue dropped from approximately 50 percent residue to 13 percent residue.

Blaine Construction: Chattanooga Takes the LEED

Blaine Construction hired Waterhouse Public Relations in 2009 to develop and coordinate the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) focused conference in Chattanooga. The event targeted area engineers, developers and construction companies to help educate businesses about the details and benefits of green building and alternative energy options while encouraging the continued development of eco-smart developments within the city of Chattanooga. With over 500 people in attendance, Chattanooga Takes the LEED brought to life the economic development opportunities and benefits possible for Chattanooga.

One North Shore

Waterhouse Public Relations was hired by One North Shore, an EarthCraft certified, mixed-use development on Chattanooga’s North Shore, to garner media attention and attract potential tenants. Throughout the development and construction process, WPR garnered multiple media placements in local, regional and industry-specific publications while also generating potential-client interest through an aggressive and strategic outdoor, print and direct mail advertising campaign.

Two North Shore Grand Opening

The 95,000 sq. ft. of green retail space with a heavy presence of outdoor, organic, conservative and eco-friendly stores was ready for business in late 2007. Waterhouse Public Relations prepared a strategic communications plan that not only increased visibility of the area while incorporating environmental messages, but also generated communitywide excitement and mass media coverage for the grand opening event in which all of Chattanooga was invited. With numerous blogs generating additional excitement and building anticipation of the Two North Shore grand opening, hundreds of Chattanooga citizens were in attendance to enjoy the festivities and shops at the Two North Shore grand opening celebration.

City of Chattanooga: Chattanooga Green

In 2006 Mayor Ron Littlefield signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement with the goal of reducing the city of Chattanooga’s global warming pollution levels 7 percent by 2012. To achieve this goal Mayor Littlefield formed Chattanooga Green, Chattanooga’s Green Committee, to advise him on steps Chattanooga government, local businesses, industries and individual citizens should take to make Chattanooga a more green and sustainable community. Waterhouse Public Relations was hired to generate public interest, participation and support for the communitywide visioning process. Immediately, WPR began implementing a grassroots community outreach campaign resulting in the participation of more than 500 residents who contributed over 1,000 green suggestions, which have since then been adopted by the City of Chattanooga.
